In the busy world we live in it’s no secret that multitasking has become an important and inevitable part of anybody’s day. However, humans are pretty bad at multitasking, unlike the computers and technology we depend on so much.
It seems as though our technology can do so many things at one time, and we as people may find this a little bit intimidating and overwhelming, as we’re certainly not capable of such efficiency. Before we start getting jealous of all that tech, however, it is important to remember that technology positively enhances the way we work and helps us juggle all of our activities and responsibilities.
Why We Can’t Multitask
Many people like to think that they are good multitaskers, whether by talking on the phone while driving, answering emails and conversing with co workers, but truth be told we are not as good as we think. The brain becomes strained when it is forced to divide attention across many activities and as a result productivity can be significantly decreased and individuals become increasingly stressed under these conditions. This is not an effective way to manage a workload or execute your daily tasks. Humans perform better and accomplish more by focusing their undivided attention on one thing and following it through to completion, as opposed to trying to accomplish several things at once or having many projects on the go.
How Technology Helps Us
Technology has been instrumental in helping us as humans accomplish more and become better multitaskers by lightening the load on our brains and helping us accomplish things faster so that more can be done in a day.
Thanks to the smartphone, we are able to stay in constant communication with instant messaging, email and social media right at our fingertips all of the time. Our computers keep our entire personal and professional lives organised and easily accessible, not to mention carrying out complex tasks such as accounting instantly. With tools like this in our arsenal it’s no wonder we feels as though we can do fifteen things at once and do them well, when in reality it’s the tech that is helping us do so.
Tools to Better Us
By using technology as a tool we are able to become more effective multitaskers, and save precious time that can be spent doing more important things. We certainly like to think the MEEM charging cable has that effect, by effectively charging your devices and backing up your personal data simultaneously. Another example would be the Apple watch that conveniently not only displays the time and weather but also brings your important notifications and messages from your smartphone right to your wrist. Technology has provided us a multitude of tools to help us do more in less time and stay on top of things more effectively, and although we may have to concede that we’re not great at multi tasking, we, as humans, were the ones developing the tech that can.
